Abstract	A new estimator of effective area surveyed is proposed for use in estimating population sizes or densities. The estimator is based on the cumulative distribution function for the observed detection areas and can be used with the data arising from either a line transect or a variable circular plot survey. Some sampling properties of the estimator are investigated and computer simulation results of comparisons with two previously proposed estimators are included. In addition, a proof of the consistency of the new estimator is given.
