Abstract
  • Hybrid-Meshnet is a communication subnet architecture for local area networks (LANs) designed to achieve a high degree of network performance and flexibility. These objectives are achieved by utilizing a dual channel structure. A token ring is used for short or prioritized data transmissions. A complimentary mesh network with arbitrary data links is used for relatively high volume and low priority data transmissions. A distributed network control and routing mechanism allocates the communication network to network nodes. Hybrid-Meshnet supports a LAN system in which the communication structure may easily be modified and changed by the insertion or deletion of data links. Hybrid-Meshnet has a learning capability which allows it to acquire global information, such as the entire network configuration and state of resources. This information may then be used to achieve efficient network control and routing. Hybrid-Meshnet also has the ability to detect faulty units in normal network operations. The performance of Hybrid- Meshnet is evaluated through simulation and it is compared to FISHNET and FLOODNET, the most competitive networks. The performance characteristics of Hybrid-Meshnet are shown to be comparable to or better than existing competitive mesh LANs. A new concept of qualitative performance degradation after a fault is introduced and the performance degradation of Hybrid-Meshnet is discussed.
