Abstract
  • This dissertation is organized in accordance to the Manuscript Documentation Dissertation format required by Oregon State University. Chapter 1 provides a general overview of Alzheimer’s disease, defines AD as marginalized population, and explains the relevance and characteristics of qualitative research. Also, Chapter 1 provides an overview of Manuscript 1 (Chapter 2) and Manuscript 2 (Chapter 3). Chapter 2 describes the research completed in Manuscript 1. This study reports on a systematic critical methodological review and content analysis of qualitative research focused on the experiences of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients. The purpose is to examine if social justice best research practices were applied to qualitative research on Alzheimer’s disease patients’ experiences. Studies were located in four electronic databases and ten studies were included in the final review. Three study coders used an analysis matrix based on the criteria by Fassinger and Morrow (2013) and Lyons et al. (2013) to code the study reports and determine the overall adherence to social justice best practice and adherence to each criteria. The review concluded that the research upon, which this study is based, was generally not done in socially just ways. Chapter 3 describes the research completed in Manuscript 2. This study reports on a systematic critical methodological review and content analysis focused on the experiences of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients. The purpose is to evaluate if good qualitative practices and procedures were applied to these individuals. Systematic searches were conducted using four literature databases and ten research articles were included in the final review. An analysis matrix was based on Devers, (1999), Meyrick, (2006), and Tracy, (2010) and was used by a team of three raters to extract, code, and organize relevant data to determine the overall fidelity of good qualitative practices and procedures on patients with Alzheimer’s disease. This review concluded that the existing qualitative research on Alzheimer’s disease patients demonstrated good qualitative procedures and practices. Finally, Chapter 4 presents findings, conclusions, and contributions to the field and future research.
