Abstract
  • The feasibility of utilizing acoustic imaging techniques for improving the undersea viewing capability of small submersibles is investigated. The limiting values of major parameters in acoustic imaging systems are established and graphs which illustrate the parametric relationships are presented. A series of sample calculations illustrate how the graphs can be employed to determine the feasibility of a proposed system, to evaluate the performance of an existing system, and to estimate the effects of various parameter trade-offs in arriving at system design characteristics. Operational tests performed on four specially constructed electro-acoustic projectors have verified the validity of several approximations used in the analysis.
