Abstract
  • The pregnancy and postpartum periods are full of major life transitions. So often, the focus of the literature is about the unborn baby and physical changes a woman experiences throughout this timeframe. Many sources often overlook women’s personal experiences in the perinatal period. Despite an increase in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, as well as substance use, the literature on this population continues to overlook the lived experiences of pregnant and postpartum women. These lived experiences are the focus of this manuscript style dissertation. Given the popularity of social media platforms, both manuscripts used blog posts as the means to explore the lived experiences of pregnant and postpartum women. The first manuscript sought to examine Reddit and subreddit blog posts of women in the perinatal period and compared it to a corpus of popular self-help books about pregnancy. The corpus was analyzed using a corpus linguistic software in RStudio called Reddit extractor to examine the keyness and collocates of the most frequently used words on social media posts about pregnancy, as well as the most frequently used words in popular self-help books about pregnancy. Results of this study indicated the strongest positive keyword was “husband,” and the strongest negative keyword was “practitioner.” This study contributes to the field of professional counseling and includes many implications for counseling and research, which are discussed in detail in response to the findings. The second manuscript examined opioid-using pregnant women’s experiences using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count software. This method provides a comprehensive examination into the linguistic and psychological nature of pregnant women using opioids. This study sought to highlight linguistic and psychological processes opioid-using pregnant women experience and report on social media. Subreddit posts were examined and compared to a reference corpus. Results showed a significant linguistic difference between first-person singular and first-person plural pronoun usage and psychological themes relating to affiliation, insight, emotion, conflict, and family. Several implications for counseling and research were developed in response to these findings. These manuscripts emphasize the need for ongoing research on topics related to pregnancy and postpartum experiences, as well as elicit further questions about this population. Collectively, they demonstrate how this methodology can examine and shine light on the realities of women’s experiences in the perinatal period and focus on important information that can be obtained from social media platforms. These studies add to the existing foundation of literature on this population and provoke questions for future research, which will continue to be beneficial to current and future mothers, professional counselors, supervisors, and counselor educators worldwide.
