  • Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world, and causes many cultural, environmental, and economic problems. In this thesis, I explore ethics in the field of tourism studies, and identify three ethical models used to discuss ethics in tourism, which are: business ethics, alternative tourism, and philosophical ethics. Utilizing both my personal experience during my study abroad in Cuba, as well as scholarly literature on Cuban tourism, I examine the complex ethical dimensions of Cuban tourism through the lens of critical tourism studies—where power relations, neocolonialism, Cuba’s dual economy and economic policies, neoliberal capitalism and Cuban socialism, and the nuanced effects of sexism and racism, all play a role. I evaluate the ability of the three ethical models to address ethical considerations in Cuban tourism, and introduce María Lugones’s “world”-traveling as a framework to impart empathetic ethical encounters between Cubans and tourists.
