Abstract
  • The severe global neglect of mental health care is believed to be the cause of a "worldwide epidemic of mental illness" (Tucci & Moukaddam, 2017). Within the United States, it is estimated that one in five children have a mental health disorder, with anxiety being one of the most commonly diagnosed mental disorders (CDC, 2020). There is a constant struggle between providing adequate mental health care and finding time to maintain education, as well as reducing the stigma regarding mental health issues. Especially amongst children, there are not enough resources supporting families or educators dedicated to educating children about the importance of mental health. This is more apparent in communities of color, where there is an increased level of resistance towards mental health acceptance, due to cultural stigmas. Utilizing a child of color as the main character, the aim of I Live In A Cave is to increase awareness, to provide resources for both educators and families, and to destigmatize mental health disorders for children through the context of a children’s picture/storybook, paired with a family/educator companion book.
