Abstract
  • This thesis is concerned with designing and simulating waste energy retrieval systems from large transformers to provide heating and cooling of a control house. The transformer selected is Transformer Bank One at the Ross Substation in the BPA system. The unit is an ASEA 250 MVA transformer with forced oil, forced air cooling. Two retrieval systems were investigated. The first system uses a heat pump which receives low temperature thermal energy from the transformer oil during the heating season. During the cooling season, solar energy is collected with a flat plate solar collector and is stored in a water storage tank. The hot water in turn drives a lithium bromide-water absorption air-conditioner for cooling. The second system uses a heat pump/air conditioner which cools the control house during the cooling season and heats the control house during the heating season. This system is powered by both a solar-driven Rankine-cycle engine and an electrically driven motor. The above systems were simulated on computer using hourly weather data of 1959 for periods of a week, a month, and up to a year to determine the time variant responses of the systems with different parameters.
