A quality problem that frequently occurs with frozen green beans
is the sloughing of the skin (epidermal tissues) of the cooked, ready-to-
serve bean pods. It was found that by giving the beans a pre-blanch
(relatively mild heat treatment) prior to the blanch treatment normally
used for frozen green beans,...
A facile route to bicyclo(2.1.1)hexanes was developed involving
the intramolecular photocyclization of 1, 5-hexadien-3-one to
bicyclo(2.1.1)hexan-2-one. A study of the chemistry of bicyclo-(2.1.1)hexan-2-one was undertaken. Deuterium exchange and borohydride
reduction demonstrated the strain present in the ketone.
Further evidence was obtained from the failure to introduce substituents
alpha to the...

Studies were conducted to determine the extent and nature of
sub-lethal effects of herbicides on plant growth. At least one
herbicide from each major chemical class of herbicides was evaluated
under greenhouse conditions. Oat plants were grown in sand
culture to eliminate soil interferences. Herbicides were applied
pre-emergence in nutrient...
The investigations reported are based on two studies; the first
is concerned with the selection practiced for performance in one inbred
Angus and three inbred Hereford lines of cattle, the realized
responses, levels of inbreeding and associated performance, and
heritabilities of the performance traits.
Selection differentials for all performance traits...
This report presents tables of suspended-sediment data collected from 1956 to 1967 at 10 sites in the Umpqua River basin. Computations based on these data indicate that average annual suspended-sediment yields at these sites range from 137 to 822 tons per square mile.
Because available data for the Umpqua River...

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of
dietary magnesium, potassium and nitrogen on hypomagnesemia.
Rats and dairy cattle were used as experimental animals. In the
rat experiments, 270 albino rats, Mus norvegicus albinus, were
used on 27 synthetic diets consisting of three levels each of casein...
