Data from the southern Cascade Mountains of
Oregon has been collected for application in computer
analysis of snowfields. Vegetation type, canopy
cover, slope, aspect, insolation, and snowfield
ground truth delineation are given consideration.
In addition, a procedure for transferral of data
onto Landsat imagery was derived.
Altitudinal variations in upland regions of the earth create
variable climatic zones and conditions. Plant and animal
communities must adapt to these conditions, and when they reach
their tolerance limits for environmental conditions at the upper
levels of a zone, they cease to exist in the environment. Humans
also utilize...
The objectives of this paper are (1) to apply
certain techniques for evaluation of social impacts in
a small community situation, and (2) to determine
whether or not the selected techniques are useful for
measuring the impact on community cohesion of a rapid
increase in single family housing in a...
The analysis of prehistoric stone features has suffered for two separate but related reasons. The first is the lack of stringency in defining the terms attributed to these structures and, second, the perception of a lack of formal attributes exhibited by them. These two factors have made it impossible to...
The archaeological resources contained in Corvallis Riverfront
Commemorative Park (RCP) have a great potential to add to the historical
record of the warehouse district of the original town of Marysville (Corvallis).
The City of Corvallis' proposed Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) project and
proposed changes to Riverfront Commemorative Park threaten to...
The Forest Homestead Act of 1906 precipitated one of the final rushes for free
land in American history. A nascent land management agency, the USDA Forest
Service, created a systematized process for the review and documentation of purported
forest homestead claims. One hundred years later, the forest-homestead examination
files of...
Although the timber industry was the major economic force in the lives of several generations of Oregon families, very little archaeological investigation has been done on the dozens of abandoned logging camps that are scattered throughout the forests of the Pacific Northwest. This project focuses on Camp 1, a 1920s...
The Battle of Big Bend was the last significant battle of the Rogue River Indian
Wars. The battle occurred 27-28 May 1856 in the Oregon Territory. The location of
the battle was along the Rogue River at a place known as the Big Bend, approximately
eight miles up river from...
The western Siskiyou Mountain forest vegetation
is grouped into eight communities based on parent
material. Three groups of data are analyzed using a computerized
ordination technique, two of the groups together,
and one separately. Two communities associated with
ultramafic parent materials, two on sandstone, one on
greenstone, and one on...
The objective of this dissertation was to understand the physical mechanisms affecting inversion events in a complex forested mountain landscape. This work was motivated by the long-term studies of climate at the Andrews Forest, short-term studies of vertical temperature, light, wind, and moisture gradient in old-growth trees, and interest in...
