- Abstract:
- Transparent films of CuScO₂₊ₓ have been prepared which show p-type electrical conductivity. The temperature dependence of the conductivity indicates semiconducting behavior with an apparent room temperature activation energy of 0.11 eV. The highest room temperature conductivity observed was 30 S cm⁻1. Films 110 nm thick show 40% transparency in most...

- Molluscan internal defenses rely heavily on circulating hemocytes. In most cases, encounters with large foreign bodies result in recognition by hemocytes followed by spreading of these defense cells over the object’s surface. The resulting encapsulation concentrates the force of the hemocytes’ assault on the foreign object. B. glabrata snail lines...

- Since bulk p-CuO/n-ZnO heterocontacts were first proposed for gas detection, rapid development has taken place in improving the overall functionality of these structures. While bulk heterocontacts have been shown to exhibit desirable sensitivity and selectivity characteristics, these devices suffer from innate diffusion and ZnO/CuO connectivity drawbacks that limit their effective...

- Seagrass ecosystems are considered some of the most productive coastal habitats in the world. One such seagrass within estuaries of the Pacific Northwest, Zostera marina (eelgrass), is recognized to be an ecosystem engineering species that provides many important ecosystem functions and services. - Thermal decomposition of several di-p-toluenesulfonylhydrazones was studied. It was found that the carbene decomposition of tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanedione, di-p-toluenesulfonylhydrazone gave two products resulting from rearrangement. One was identified as 2,5-dimethyl-1,3,4-hexatriene. A tentative structure for the second was proposed. During the course of the study, a more convenient procedure for thermal decompositions was...

- The semiconductor gallium arsenide (GaAs) has many potential advantages over the more widely used semiconductor silicon (Si). These include higher low field mobility, semi-insulating substrates, a direct band-gap, and greater radiation hardness. All these advantages offer distinct opportunities for implementation of new circuit functions or extension of the operating conditions...

- Abstract:
- We measure the forward-backward asymmetries A[subscript]FB of charged Ξ and Ω baryons produced in p (p) over bar collisions recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at √s = 1.96 TeV as a function of the baryon rapidity y. We find that the asymmetries A[subscript]FB for charged...

- Three highly purified forms of cytochrome P-450 (P-450a, P-450b, P-450c) from Aroclor 1254-induced rat hepatic microsomes catalyzed the monooxygenation of 1-(2- chloroethyl)-3-(trans-4-methylcyclohexyl)-1-nitrosourea (MeCCNU) and 1-(2-chloroethyl)-3-(cyclohexyl)-1-nitrosourea (CCNU) in the presence of purified NADPH cytochrome P-450 reductase, NADPH and oxygen. Cytochrome P -450- dependent monooxygenation of CCNU gave six alicyclic hydroxylation products...

- In this thesis, we examined the effects of the exposures to anthropogenic pollutants on the fish, primarily juvenile chinook salmon, immune system using newly and recently developed immune assays. In addition, we developed a new assay for measuring immunocompetence of fish. In the first chapter, the Alamar Blue assay was...

- Abstract:
- Phaseolus vulgaris, the common bean, is susceptible to many bacterial, fungal and viral diseases. However, resistance to several diseases has been identified in related Phaseolus species, P. coccineus, P. acutifolius and P. lunatus. Thus, interspecific hybridization could result in transfer of beneficial characteristics. One of the problems encountered in interspecific...

- The refresh times of all dynamic charge storage devices, best characterized by the generation lifetime at roan temperature and the recombination lifetime at higher device operating temperatures (T>70°C), strongly influence the efficient and successful operation of dynamic charge storage devices such as DRAM's and CCD's. Both recombination and generation lifetime...

- A single oral dose of DDT, ranging from 40 to 200 mg/kg, had a drastic effect on the in vivo acetate metabolism in rats. The normal elimination pattern of the expired ¹⁴CO₂ from ¹⁴C-labelled acetate was distorted, and the rate of output of the ¹⁴CO₂ was decreased. The ratio of...

- The immune system is a complex network of cellular processes working in harmony to guard us against pathogenic attack. Of utmost importance is the ability of the immune system to discriminate between “self” and “non-self” and diseased versus healthy. Recognition of antigens complexed to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules is...

- The properties of (1-x)BaTiO3-xBi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3 (BT-BMT) ceramics were fabricated from reagent-grade ceramic powders by solid-state methods and investigated for solubility, relative permittivity, dielectric loss, polarization, and electromechanical strain. The solubility limit was found to be between x = 0.3 and 0.4. Ba-deficient samples were fabricated, corresponding to stable single-phase compositions; these...

- Time-dependent electronic transport is increasingly important to the state-of-the-art device design and fabrication. The development of nanoscale sensing, the harnessing and control of structural fluctuations, and the advancement of next-generation materials all require a treatment of quantum dynamics beyond the level of traditional methods and a more nuanced approach to...
