Poor quality water or an inadequate supply of water can take the pleasure from country living. Problems with quantity or quality of domestic water occur all over Oregon.
Measuring the flow rate of water is the first step to good water management. All water right holders in the State of Oregon must be able to measure the flow rate of the water being diverted.

Esterase activity of an aqueous extract of the green bean was
separated into fourteen bands, while aqueous extracted pea esterases
revealed seven bands, by polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. The
fourteen bands of bean esterase activity formed three groups; slow,
intermediate and fast moving. α-Naphthyl acetate, propionate, and
n-butyrate and AS naphthol acetate...
This study was designed to assess chiorpyrifos exposure of a group of farmers by determining internal dose associated with a given application of this insecticide. This involved the monitoring of urinary levels of 3,5,6 trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP), the major metabolite of chlorpyrifos. Incidental exposure was evaluated by determining the levels of...

Crops were grown at the experimental farms using accepted cultural practices within the limits of experimentation or trials were conducted on growers' fields. Most experiments were designed as randomized complete blocks with two to five replications. Herbicide. treatments were applied uniformly with precision plot sprays or granular formulations were distributed...
Rapid and sensitive detection of stress hormones, such as cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), can benefit the diagnosis of diseases related to adrenal gland disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, and more. Stress hormones fluctuate in a circadian rhythm, the highest in the early morning and the lowest at night;...
The Chloroflexi CL500-11 clade contributes a large proportion of the bacterial biomass in the oxygenated hypolimnia of deep lakes worldwide, including the world's largest freshwater system, the Laurentian Great Lakes. Traits that allow CL500-11 to thrive and its biogeochemical role in these environments are currently unknown. Here, we found that...

Bone loss is common in astronauts during long-duration spaceflight missions with severe bone loss often occurring in the proximal femur, a region not typically investigated in animal models for microgravity. We recently evaluated bone microarchitecture in the femoral head in rapidly growing male Sprague Dawley rats subjected to a 4-day...
Behavioral modeling is increasingly an imperative component of system design as the systems under construction become more and more complex. Without behavioral modeling available to the modern designer, design and verification of these systems would be much more laborious. Additionally, with the increasing computational power of today's modeling and simulation...
This paper examines the permanence of agricultural land afforestation under stylized carbon markets at the regional
level in the US. Attention is focused on Southern and Midwest regions which historically have experienced
a relatively large amount of land-use change between the agriculture and forest sectors. The Forest and Agriculture

The pseudo-glycosyltransferase VldE catalyzes non-glycosidic C-N coupling between an unsaturated cyclitol and a saturated aminocyclitol with the conservation of the stereochemical configuration of the substrates to form validoxylamine A 7'-phosphate, the biosynthetic precursor of the antibiotic validamycin A. To study the molecular basis of its mechanism, the three-dimensional structures of...

Members of the SAR11 clade of heterotrophic α-proteobacteria are ubiquitous and abundant in the world's oceans where they are thought to play a pivotal role in the global carbon cycle. The first SAR11 bacterium cultivated in vitro, 'Candidatus Pelagibacter ubique' HTCC1062 (Ca. P. ubique), was isolated by dilution into sterile...
Many environmental factors influence cardiovascular and
respiratory activities of crustaceans. The effects of natural
stressors (hypoxia, low salinity, high temperature) have been well
studied, but the effects of pollutants upon these two organ systems
have received less attention. The presence of the pesticide

A growing body of work reveals that animal-mediated pollination is negatively affected by anthropogenic disturbance. Landscape-scale disturbance results in two often inter-related processes: (1) habitat loss, and (2) disruptions of habitat configuration (i.e. fragmentation). Understanding the relative effects of such processes is critical in designing effective management strategies to limit...
Current studies suggest that perfluorinated organic compounds, such as fluorotelomer alcohols (FtOHs) in the troposphere, may be precursors of perfluorocarboxylic acids and perfluorosulfonates in remote regions. Fluorinated organic compounds were investigated in archived extracts collected from remote locations in Okinawa, Japan (HSO) and Mount Bachelor, Oregon (MBO) during the springs...

Climate change, combined with population growth, is expected to exacerbate water scarcity globally. In the Columbia River basin (CRB), streamflow is managed for multiple objectives with a network of dams and reservoirs distributed throughout the basin that may mitigate climate change effects on water scarcity. Northern highbush blueberry is a long-lived perennial crop that is well adapted to low soil pH conditions. The plants are often shallow rooted and absorb primarily the ammonium (NH₄) form of nitrogen (N) rather than nitrate-N (NO₃-N). Traditionally, commercial blueberry fields have been irrigated with overhead sprinklers and fertilized using...

China has experienced rapid economic growth in the last twenty years, accompanied by large-scale land conversion, severe environmental degradation, and rising carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. Wood is a major pool of organic carbon that is highly resistant to decay, owing largely to the presence of lignin. The only organisms capable of substantial lignin decay are white rot fungi in the Agaricomycetes, which also contains non–lignin-degrading brown rot and ectomycorrhizal species. Comparative analyses of 31 fungal...

Annual grass invasion into shrub-dominated ecosystems is associated with changes in nutrient cycling that may alter nitrogen (N) limitation and retention. The degradation of organic carbon in subseafloor sediments on continental margins contributes to the largest reservoir of methane on Earth. Sediments in the Andaman Sea are composed of ~ 1% marine-derived organic carbon and biogenic methane is present. Our objective was to determine microbial abundance and diversity in sediments that...
We investigated how large carnivores, herbivores, and plants may be linked to the maintenance of native species biodiversity through trophic

opportunity to examine the cascading effects of carnivore–herbivore interactions...
