This novel-in-progress is an attempt to struggle with the complicated process of forging one’s identity in the murk of urban Northwest life. The protagonist of this piece is confused, to put it lightly: bi-racial, torn between the affections of divorced parents, unsure about his religious views, and baffled by his...
Although the timber industry was the major economic force in the lives of several generations of Oregon families, very little archaeological investigation has been done on the dozens of abandoned logging camps that are scattered throughout the forests of the Pacific Northwest. This project focuses on Camp 1, a 1920s...

For centuries humans have been searching for precious metals. The search for gold has greatly changed the landscape of the American West, beginning in the 1850s and continuing today. Various gold rushes around the country created mining colonies in remote areas, thereby connecting the frontier with the rest of America...
At the May 19, 1982 meeting of the Governing Council of the
United Nations Environment Program, Kenya President Daniel Arap

need for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to get more
involved in international conservation efforts with the following
statement:
"The issue before...

Relatively recent increases in ponderosa pine abundance have effected unprecedented changes to ecosystem structure and function. Efforts to restore ponderosa pine systems are often focused on the manipulation of tree structure and the re-introduction of a more natural fire regime. Successful restoration should also incorporate understory components but information addressing...
This compilation follows the Fifty-Seven-Year Index to the Sierra Club Bulletin annuals, 1893-1949, compiled by Dorothy H. Bradley and George Shochat and published by the Club in 1952. The specification, inspection, and remedial treatment of utility poles are addressed. Included are discussions of enhancing specifications for improved performance, techniques for detecting decay and other defects, and chemical treatments available for arresting decay of poles in service.
Fifty-seven species of wildlife rely on or frequently use snags for breeding, roosting, or denning in Oregon and Washington. Because of the diverse...
Instruction in a University Honors College was evaluated using Small Group Instructional Diagnosis (SGID), a qualitative evaluation process. Fifty-one class sections were evaluated over a three-year period to determine what worked to help students learn, what did not work, and suggestions for improvement. Seven instructors used both SGID and an...
Archival information about fish and water in the Umpqua Basin can be found in reports housed in disparate locations (e.g., offices of various State and Federal agencies and local organizations). A comprehensive bibliography of grey literature, important or uncataloged reports, and published reports is one means of recording what research...
The inherent and apparent optical properties of different ocean regimes are the basis for all optical remote sensing of the ocean. Ecological information derived from remote sensors therefore relies on having a detailed understanding of how particulate backscattering and absorption contribute to the bulk optical signal. The absorption

ABSTRACT
Improved Fumigants
After 13 years, chioropicrin, methylisothiocyanate (MIT), Vapam, and
Vorlex continue to effectively control internal decay of pressure-treated
Douglas-fir transmission poles. The estimated retreating schedules for
application of these fumigants to treated wood may be as long as 10 years
for Vapam and 15 years for the others....
Evaluations of previously established field trials indicate that
chioropicrin, and Vorlex continue to provide protection to Douglas-fir poles,
although the degree of protection is diminishing. Reapplication of Vapam 18
years after the initial application eliminated fungi which had recolonized the
poles. Methylisothiocyanate (MITC) continues to protect Douglas-fir poles 12
years...
The current trend toward the establishment and care of forests for a

The settlement history of a remote area in the Coast Range of Oregon, from the 1870s to the 1930s, is examined through factors that may have influenced the success or failure, and length of residence of the homesteaders and later residents. Despite the rugged and isolated location, a small community...
