Dwarf mistletoes still pose management problems on the Flathead Reservation. We describe a management program, to be conducted in conjunction with the silvicultural program, which will help reduce the impact of dwarf mistletoe on Douglas-fir, western larch, and lodgepole pine. This program covers fiscal years 1986 through 1990.
Research on campsite selection behavior has given managers of outdoor recreation resources a better understanding of users' needs and preferences. However, researchers have found nagging inconsistencies, not only across settings but also between campers' stated preferences and their actual behavior. This thesis re-examines the campsite selection research in light of...
The preliminary results of a study of the insect emergence at Findley Lake in the Cascade Mountains of Washington during 1972 are presented. Bottom samples were taken from different regions of the lake to compare
the insect emergence at the surface, the physical conditions of the bottom,
and the biological...
Limnology is undergoing a transition to high-throughput -omic analysis of freshwater
bacterial communities. An important first step in making the transition is to
characterize several genomes that can be used as references to guide metagenome
assembly and analysis. Here I characterize four new freshwater cyanobacterial
genomes, a pair of lake...
The mountain pine beetle infestation on Bureau of Land Management lands in Centennial Valley has increased from about 500 acres in 1977 to more than 7,000 in 1979. Average number of trees per acre killed has more than quadrupled, increasing from 9.8 in 1977 to 47.8 in 1979. Predictions for...
Insect damage was extensive to Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, western white pine, and western larch cones at most seed production areas surveyed in 1979. From 70 to 100 percent of the cones from several collecting periods were injured. Moderate damage (40-70 percent of cones injured) occurred to Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, western...
An evaluation was made in 21 seed production areas and 1 seed orchard in Region 1 to identify the primary insect pests and to assess amount of injury caused. Cones from Douglas-fir, grand fir, western larch, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, and western white pine were collected periodically and examined. The...
A method of measuring the dehydrogenase activity of sediments at lOC was
calibrated by direct microcalorimetry at the same temperature. Field
measurements of dehydrogenase activity of sediments in Lake Washington
were converted to rates of metabolic heat release by means of the significant
regression of dehydrogenase activity on metabolic heat...
