In June of 1994, the Oregon Agricultural Statistics Service (OASS) conducted a commodity survey that included an estimate of the number of equines (horses, ponies, mules, donkeys, miniatures, and zebras) in Oregon.
The goals for a well-managed small-acreage horse farm are:
A productive pasture with plenty of grass and few weeds
Almost no mud during the rainy season
All nutrients (manure and stall waste) generated by the horses
recycled to feed the pasture or removed from the farm and
recycled
