Abstract
  • The Indonesian Coral Reef Rehabilitation and Management Program (COREMAP) is a 3 phase, 18 year (1998 - 2016) national program. The first Phase operated in 4 pilot sites and ran from 1998 - 2004. The second phase runs from 2005 - 2010. The performance of the four pilot sites are compared and contrasted. Two of the sites, in Riau and East Nusa Tenggara, performed particularly well in achieving progress with the communities taking on the management of their coastal areas with the goals of protecting their reefs and improving their incomes and livelihoods. The factors that led to success at these two sites are highlighted. The factors that led to the poorer performance at the other two sites are also describes. The paper concludes by appraising the impact of the project to date, identifies some of the key lessons learned and outlines how these and other lessons learned have been incorporated into the design of Phase II which will expand the program to a significant portion of the country's richest coral reef areas.
