Abstract
  • This dataset provides the observations used to answer questions of interest regarding how intersection and traffic characteristics impact the frequency and severity of bicycle-vehicle conflicts as part of the field data analysis portion of the study titled "SPR 833 Intersection Treatments and Bicyclist Safety." Parameters such as bicycle-vehicle conflicts (measured using post-encroachment time), hourly road user volumes, and conflict-involved road user speeds were extracted from field-collected videos recorded at twelve signalized intersection approaches in Portland, Oregon. Of the twelve intersection approaches, three had bike boxes, three had mixing zones, three had bicycle signals, and three served as control sites with no specific bicycle-focused treatment.
  • This dataset provides the observations used to answer the experimental questions of interest regarding: Average velocity, Lateral position, Galvanic skin response, Eye-tracking fixations, and Survey data for the simulator portion of the study titled "SPR 833 Intersection Treatments and Bicyclist Safety." Measurements such as average velocity and lateral position describe participant riding behavior as they approach an intersection, where the data was gathered from the Oregon State University Bicycling Simulator recorded at 60 times per second. Data pertaining to the galvanic skin response and eye-tracking fixations provide data on participants level of comfort as well as what they focused on while approaching an intersection while riding a bicycle. Survey responses collected in this study provide information directly from the study participants about their experiences with the experimental variables encountered.
