Abstract	This paper, The Uses of Absence in Sappho’s Poetry, discusses how Sappho’s absences draw attention to more complex concepts in the poems such as the values of physical absence, literary absence, and the opposition of absence/presence. I take advantage of the physical space left on the Oxford University Press edition of Sappho’s poetry, and conclude the physical absence of words on the page brings to light the metaphorical literary absence taking place throughout the poems.
