Abstract
  • Excavations at the Cooper’s Ferry site (10IH73) revealed a long record of repeated human occupation extending from the late Pleistocene into the early Holocene (~16,000-10,000 cal BP) and have yielded unique insights into the Western Stemmed Tradition (WST), which includes. Several studies have focused on WST pit features encountered at the site, and in keeping with this research theme, I focus on the analysis of a cultural pit designated as Feature 95. This feature offers an archaeological snapshot of site occupation at ~9,679 +/- 33 BP (11,190 – 11,093 cal BP). Feature 95 is a pit that contained two WST points, lithic debitage, stone tool fragments, and fragmented faunal remains, including carnivore teeth and a canid mandible, and represents a unique view into WST life at Cooper’s Ferry. Studying the contents of Feature 95 and comparing its archaeological patterns to other pit features studied within the site provides a way to interpret potential cultural activities that transpired at Cooper’s Ferry. This study not only contributes to our understanding of early pit feature functionality but also sheds light on the broader context of site occupation. Feature 95, with its diverse contents, presents a complex picture of human behavior, suggesting the performance of multiple functions. The evidence described in this study is interpreted as indicating the pit features served potential roles related to refuse disposal, ritual activities, food storage, and possibly multifunctional use. However, these interpretations sometimes contradict each other, adding a layer of complexity to Feature 95's role at the site.
