  • Lymnea columella snails were exposed to 3-5 newly emerged Fasciola hepatica miracidia. The procedure insured 75-100 percent infection of the host. Groups of 40 each exposed snails were placed in controlled temperature containers and maintained at the following series of temperatures: 8°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 30°, and 35° C. Two exposed snails were removed from each container one day after exposure and every seventh day thereafter. The removed snails were fixed in 10 percent neutral formalin and prepared for serial sectioning and staining. The stained sections were checked for the presence of larval types, i.e. sporocysts, rediae, and cercariae. No larval forms were seen in snails maintained at 8°, 15° nor at 35° C. Snails died in the latter after six days. The rediae were seen in snails maintained for 14 days at 25° and at 30° C. Redial development was seen at 20° C, 29 days after exposure and at 14 days in snails cultured at 25° and 30° C, At 30° C the larvae maintained accelerated growth for 21-25 days after exposure before the death of the snail hosts. The first motile cercariae were seen 45-47 days after exposure at 25° C and by 60-65 days at 20° C.
