Abstract
  • A model to simulate the dry-process pressing of wood composites is presented. The model uses as its starting point a pre-existing mass and heat transfer model. A number of furnish material properties, including fluid permeability, thermal conductivity, hygroscopicity and rheological parameters, are reviewed and modified for use in the pressing simulation model. The furnish used was thermomechanically produced pulp consisting mainly of Douglas-fir fibers. Particular attention is given to permeability changes that are associated with furnish density (level of consolidation). A technique was developed and used to determine horizontal and vertical mat permeabilities simultaneously as a function of compaction. Small circular mats were pre-formed before being compressed to different thicknesses for permeability computation. Permeability values were found to decrease exponentially as mat density increased. The simulation model accounts for mat behavior during complete pressing cycles including the press closing stage. One of the main features of the model is the prediction of mat density distributions through the composite thickness. The model is used to predict temperature, moisture content, partial vapor pressure and density distributions within circular mats for selected furnish and press conditions. A limited number of laboratory validation experiments were conducted and the results are compared with some of the model predictions.
