Abstract
  • Coastal Oregon is deficient in quality construction aggregate. There is, however, an abundance of lower quality, or marginal aggregate available for construction purposes. The purpose of this report is to develop techniques for upgrading marginal aggregates with portland cement and methods for evaluating the relative performance of these stabilized materials when used in highway construction. The selected optimum cement content for three marginal aggregates, Eckman Creek, Big A Sandstone, and Dredged Spoil, and one quality aggregate, Ocean Lake, was determined using the standard Freeze/Thaw (F/T) and Wet/Dry (W/D) tests. The mix properties, tensile strength, elastic modulus, fatigue life and effect of F/T and W/D cycles on these properties were evaluated. The tensile strength of all the aggregates decreased after the F/T or W/D tests with the exception of Big A Sandstone. The elastic modulus was decreased for all the aggregates after W/D test only. The F/T test had little effect. The fatigue curve in terms of stress vs. number of repetitions showed a significant difference after F/T or W/D test. The structural contribution of these four materials were analyzed and layer equivalencies developed by using the Multilayered Elastic Analysis procedure. The results indicate the required Cement Treated Base (CTB) thickness of Big A Sandstone and Eckman Creek are close to the quality aggregates - Ocean Lake. For the Dredged Spoil, the required CTB thickness increased to about 1 and a 1/2 times those of quality aggregate.
