  • The urban hydrology and hydraulics program, US EPA SWMM 5, has been coupled with a compartment model of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in the system dynamics software, STELLA, to simulate the radiocesium pathway from urban catchment to the wastewater treatment sludge. Two literature case studies were re-examined. Firstly, a SWMM model of a fully distributed case study was constructed and calibrated for a global sensitivity analysis for sub-intervals of imperviousness. Surface fixation and washoff coefficients were found to be most sensitive. Next, a reported radiocesium tracer WWTP study served as a basis for a compartment model of a conventional activated sludge process WWTP in STELLA. A pseudo first order sorption model was implemented to provide for non-instantaneous equilibrium in the aeration tank. Tanks-in-series delays and conveyors were employed to approximate non-ideal behaviour at hourly time scale. Finally, this work flow was applied to a separate storm water system WWTP in Japan that was affected by deposited radiocesium from the nuclear power plant accident. The present work contributes to the use of semi-distributed urban washoff models and downstream compartmental WWTP fate models for the prediction of radiocesium contamination in WWTP sludge due to wet weather events.
