Abstract
  • SARS-CoV-2, also commonly known as COVID-19, was indiscriminate in reducing opportunities for students’ participation in accelerated learning programs. In 2020, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) issued a state of emergency, and schools across the K-16 continuum limited in-person instruction. As an unforeseen consequence, many school districts were unable to administer their accelerated learning program. In response to these enrollment disruptions, Chemeketa’s College Credit Now office created and launched the program BOLT: Begin Online Learning Today, which provided one free online college course to nearly 500 students within the Chemeketa service district. Students participating in this opportunity were able to gain valuable college-going experiences despite COVID-19 shut-downs. This case study of the unique experiences of eleven BOLT students from Title I, rural, and majority-minority high schools, examined how students made meaning of their experiences, diving deeper to examine how students felt connected, valued, and supported against the backdrop of a global pandemic
