Abstract
  • Goats were the first livestock species to be domesticated by humans and continue to function as a key source of protein and economic value for many communities. In the sixteenth century, Spanish colonists brought goats to the Americas. Unlike other nations, the United States did not maintain a significant market for goats and other livestock species became staples of the American table instead. However, like the rest of the United States, Oregon goat industries have been growing in recent years as demand for local and specialty goat products is on the rise. For this report, 53 Oregon goat producers from various goat industry categories completed a 25-question survey. This survey asked producers about the size and scale of their business, business practices, livestock management, herd health and the ecological impacts of their operation. From the data collected, this report seeks to create an accurate and current depiction of Oregon goat industries, their primary characteristics and basic practices. The goal of this report is to provide baseline data for studies of narrower, more specific goat industry topics in the future.
