Abstract
  • Through comparison and analysis of selected holidays in countries with significantly different features (Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and the United States), this study aims to gauge the impact of holiday celebrations in influencing cultural values in those countries studied. K. Zygulski’s classification system for holidays was applied to divide the holidays of three countries into six groups for comparison. The extensive analysis revealed the impact that the USSR has had on Russian and Kyrgyz culture, the dominance of the Kyrgyz nomadic heritage over religion on Kyrgyz culture, the power of American capitalism in the creation of commercial culture, and the control of peoples' behavior through the adjustment of holidays by religious institutions and governments. The complex interplay of the historic archetype with changing interpretation through the construct of holidays brings light to how holiday practices serve various purposes in reflecting and reinforcing national cultures.
