Abstract
  • University-led SafeRide programs are a potential strategy for preventing driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana among college students. College students have high rates of binge drinking and marijuana use, making them a vulnerable population for driving under the influence-related harm. SafeRide programs are known within the community as an alternative to driving under the influence and for safer nighttime transportation. The present study investigated how students at Oregon State University use the program ASOSU SafeRide, and if it is used as an alternative to driving under the influence. A cross-sectional self-report study was conducted, and 120 responses were analyzed (n=120). Survey results indicated that students use ASOSU SafeRide as an alternative to drinking and driving, for safety at night, and to access work, campus, and social events. This study will contribute to the existing literature on preventing harm related to driving under the influence.
