Abstract
  • The intent of this thesis is to develop three creative non-fiction essays exploring the experience of being an undergraduate woman in a STEM field. The essays will all take on variations in form, humor, and perspectives. The purpose is to explore the position of women in STEM and the different ways of conveying this information. The thesis aims to answer the questions: How does variation in form shift the meaning of the essay? Does humor have a place in a serious topic like this, and if so, what does it add? Does the perspective and experience of one person allow the reader to understand these circumstances in depth, or does the experience of many contribute more to the message by showing the quantity of people in a similar position? The variation in creative non-fiction components and modalities will show how each impact storytelling and which best suit this topic. Variations in form and humor draw a reader in to read. The perspective of one person connects the reader more personally to the issue, while the expanse of many experiences show the reader how common these circumstances are.
  • Key Words: women, STEM, engineering, creative non-fiction.
