A technique for solving efficiently the catenary problem encountered in surveying with tapes is presented. The theory of the catenary solution is outlined, and our technique is shown to solve correctly the catenary for all conditions. Analysis of error that compared the catenary correction to the more commonly used parabolic...
The two classic theories of the distribution of
cities in an urban system are the rank size rule
and central place theory. The rank size relationships,
as incorporated into G. K. Zipf's Principle
of Least Effort, is seen as the result of a balancing
of the opposing forces of urban...
Extensive morphological and growth habit variations have been
reported for bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata), a widespread western
shrub frequently used in range revegetation projects. Hybridization
of this species occurs with cliffrose (Cowania stansburiana) at the
point of their overlapping range in Utah and is believed to be
responsible for expression of...

A complex and sometimes serious problem facing modern day forest
managers is that of estimating and analyzing potential on-site impacts
which result from forest activities. A major type of adverse impact
is man-Initiated forest erosion. This consequence can be substantially
magnified when forest harvest and road activities are implemented in...
A method of calculating decay heat is presented which is a simplification of existing calculational methods, the summation method in particular. The method involves the assumption that one physical process, neutron capture, is negligible in order to simplify the governing physical equations. A Greens function is derived and the decay...
The sensitivity of Bacteroides nodosus, causative agent of sheep foot rot, to 24 selected antimicrobial agents was tested. Many contaminants ordinarily associated with foot rot lesions were sensitive to lincomycin while B nodosus demonstrated resistance to this antibiotic. A concentration of 1.08 μg of lincomycin/ml of basal medium optimally inhibited...
In an attempt to provide a practical means to measure the information
processing capacity of a real-time digital processing system a
theoretical framework, the Real-Time Schemata, whose basis is a
schematic description and a measure of "useful information," is presented.
The description applies to processes that would typically be
implemented...
The North American species of the shore fly genus Notiphila Fallen were taxonomically revised. Over 13,000 specimens were examined from throughout the Nearctic Region and information relating to the biology of many species occurring in the West was gathered from both field and laboratory studies. Previously used characters were reevaluated;...
Social competence has emerged in research on social development
as a construct unifying behavioral and motivational dimensions of social
development in the preschool child. It draws from theories of social
learning, cognitive development, and competence motivation. The
theoretical relevance and empirical utility of the construct indicate
the need for further...
In this research a model is developed to predict population for relatively
rural areas experiencing rapid economic development. Of the many
ways to predict population size, in this research a "demographic-economic"
model is chosen for use. The economic variables which aid in projecting
population are total employment, and net changes...
Under July 1, 1972 - June 30, 1973 cost levels for the Little White Salmon and Willard National Fish Hatcheries, small budget reductions made by reducing expenditures for fish food resulted in sharp increases in average total cost per pound of salmon produced.
