This work prepared YInMnO3, YCuTiO3, and YInFeO3 solid state pigments via microwave synthesis. The microwave-prepared pigments contain optical and structural properties similar to their furnace homologues. Overall synthesis times for each pigment have been significantly reduced via microwave synthesis, while keeping the same relative phase purity as solid-state.
The ritualized courtship of the Red-legged salamander, Plethodon shermani, has been studied extensively. Males and females possess brightly colored red legs, but little is known about the implications of this coloration on mate choice. An alternative hypothesis is that coloration may be used as a warning signal to predators. Animals...
Marine mammals use acoustics for many life functions, including communication. Male fin whales produce a call around 20 Hz and the pattern of a series of calls can vary based on the individual, geographic region, and season. I examined the variation between songs in fin whales. A glider was deployed...
As part of an HHMI funded research project, I showed that overexpression (OE) of actin (ACT2) in Arabidopsis thaliana alters the expression of genes involved in plant immunity. Others have previously shown that knockout (KO) mutants of actin depolymerizing factor 4 are affected in the same gene as ACT2-OE. For...
Evidence-based interventions are considered to be the most successful interventions used in public health. They have the research to support their potential success when implemented by an organization. Evidence-based interventions are created and tested, then are implemented by a variety of organizations in various geographic locations, including non-profit organizations, public...
The paper focuses on the American Ambulance Field Service (later American Field Service) and the young American men who, for various reasons, volunteered to serve in it prior to the entrance of the United States into WWI. It discusses the formation of the Field Service, gives a basic overview, and...
The history of school spirit and tradition at Oregon State University is explored, with emphasis on orgins and the impacts of World War I, World War II, and the Anti-Establishment movement.
HafSOx is a dielectric material that also functions as an insulator. It is able to be
spin-coated onto a silicon substrate, creating a thin, amorphous film. It is very dense, which helps lead it to a high dielectric constant, making it ideal for electronic devices through the use of lithography....
Self-Monitoring scores were significantly influenced by the social context that respondents considered while completing it. Normal distributions were generated within testing conditions. Bimodal distributions were generally found across testing conditions and within a no context specified condition, suggesting item ambiguity might be leading to the scale’s class variable interpretation.
Plagiobothrys hirtus is Oregon’s top priority for endangered plant species recovery, and the wetlands of Douglas County provide the only habitat for this plant in the world. The goal is to downlist this species from endangered to threatened, and in order to do that, existing populations must be protected, and...
Between the years of 2006 and 2011, 183 marine mammal strandings were recorded and analyzed by the Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratory at Oregon State University. Most of the strandings were of pinnipeds and porpoises. The species represented were California sea lion (69 animals), Steller sea lion (18 animals), harbor seal (42...
It is estimated that menstrual dysfunction, including amenorrhea, affects anywhere from 6-79% of active women1. Amenorrhea is defined as the absence of a menstrual cycle lasting more than three months2. Secondary amenorrhea occurs after menarche2. Primary amenorrhea is the delay of menarche past 15 yrs2. Menstrual dysfunction can negatively impact...
The detection of mammalian FMO’s is important in the understanding of active FMO 2.1 and its role in metabolizing drugs to treat tuberculosis. Refinement of an absolute quantification (AQUA) mass spectrometry method is needed to be able to quantify the different FMO isoforms present in mammalian tissue. We are doing...
Occlusive thrombi that cause cardiovascular diseases form on the walls of blood vessels and propagate across the lumen under pressure gradient-driven flow, impaired antithrombotic, and enhanced prothrombotic conditions. Development of a well controlled and validated ex vivo model that can mimic these pathological conditions would provide a useful tool for...
