Today's university library has many digitally accessible resources, both indexes to content and considerable original content. Using off-the-shelf search technology provides a single point of access into library resources, but we have found that such full-text indexing technology is not entirely satisfactory for library searching.
In response to this, we...
Since 1962, persons desiring to harvest intertidal nonfood invertebrates in permit areas or in excess of personal-use bag limits have been required to obtain a collecting permit from the Fish Commission and report the number of animals and areas where taken. This report summarizes collecting activities and trends for 1969.
Personal-use razor clam diggers were sampled on alternate minus tides from April to September. The number of diggers and the number and age composition of clams dug were noted. Wastage was sampled each tide series.
Since 1962 people holding intertidal, nonfood invertebrate collecting permits have been required to report the number of animals harvested. This report summarizes collecting activities and trends for the calendar year 1968.
Technological advances of the last three decades have caused an enormous increase in the amount of published and unpublished information generated by our society. This inflation has created the need for improved information management systems. Existing systems are inadequate primarily because they are discipline-oriented and lack the flexibility that is...
At the start of the public’s use of the internet in 1983, whatever news made it online was expected to be open and free of charge. However, the idea that news should always be accessible online changed as newspapers moved most of their content online and needed online subscriptions to...
Razor clam catches from Clatsop beaches (Tillamook Head-Columbia River) were sampled regularly from March through September and periodically the rest of the year. This report discusses public interaction with personal-use fisheries. It also discusses reasons for razor clam violations and means taken to try and decrease them. Finally, it gives the total harvest and age composition data, and contains the results of a survey of clam diggers on Clatsop County beaches for 1965.
Pharmacy technicians play a critical role in delivering patient care. As part of their regular job roles, however, these individuals spend time walking on the campuses of the healthcare facilities at which they work. This walking or ‘move-time’ is considered nonvalue-added time and constitutes a cost for the organization.

The Columbia River seal control program operated under legislative authority. The Fish Commission paid has paid a bounty since 1936 and hired a seal hunter during 1958-1970. In May 1972, the author wrote to resource management and research agencies in 18 seaboard states, Canada, and Scotland to seek suggestions for...
In text classification, labeling features is often less time consuming than labeling entire documents. In situations where very little labeled training data is available, feature relevance feedback has the potential to dramatically increase classification performance. We review previous work on incorporating feature relevance feedback in the form of labeled features...

Can collaborative filtering be successfully applied to digital
libraries in a manner that improves the effectiveness of the
library? Collaborative filtering systems remove the limitation of
traditional content-based search interfaces by using individuals to
evaluate and recommend information. We introduce an approach
where a digital library user specifies their need...
The history, current condition, and options for restoration at Metro's Killin Wetland were outlined recently by Christy (see citation information below). As part of the site evaluation, Metro requested an inventory of Killin Wetland, which is presented here with information on other miscellaneous features observed that may be of interest...
Willamette Falls has long been a focus of botanical interest, but industrial development at the site has limited public access for over a century. The closure of the Blue Heron paper mill on the south bank of the river, and proposed redevelopment of the site, has given planners an opportunity...
The Western Snowy Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus) breeds along the coast of the Pacific Ocean in California, Oregon, and Washington and at alkaline lakes in the interior of the western United States (Page et al. 1991). Loss of habitat, predation pressures, and disturbance have caused the decline of the coastal...

Oregon Natural Heritage Information Center Report.
Sphagnum fens on the coast of Oregon are unique globally and contain a variety of rare plants and animals found nowhere else in the landscape. Evidence indicates that in the absence of disturbance, many open fens have converted to tall shrub and forest stands...
In September 2014, the Metro Natural Area Program engaged The Wetland Conservancy to develop a scientific assessment of Metro’s 590-acre Killin Wetlands Natural Area. Metro acquired the lands comprising the KWNA between 2000 and 2012 with funds from two voter approved open space bond measures. Since 2000, Metro has sought...
This report summarizes vegetation data collected in July 2015 in wet meadow and marshy habitats on the Double O Unit of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR). Because vegetation sampled at the Double O was wetter and more alkaline than wet meadows sampled at the south end of the refuge in...
Programmers spend a substantial fraction of their debugging time by navigating
through source code, yet little is known about how programmers navigate. With the
continuing growth in size and complexity of software, this fraction of time is likely to
increase, which presents challenges to those seeking both to understand and...

Despite limited success, today’s information retrieval (IR) systems are not intelligent and reliable. IR systems return poor search results when users formulate their information needs into incomplete or ambiguous queries (i.e., weak queries). Therefore, one of the main challenges in modern IR research is to provide consistent results across all...

This is the 4th edition of a book that was initiated with the annotation of the function of all the genes in the most commonly studied baculovirus, AcMNPV. It has been almost six years since I reviewed this literature. As a measure of the research that has occurred over this...
A panel of speakers from three universities explored their challenges and progress in building programs to support research data management, whether within the library system or with research offices or computing groups. Since 2012 Oregon State University has partnered with its research office and graduate school, helping students prepare data...
In this paper, we consider an upscaled model describing the multiscale flow of a single-phase incompressible fluid and transport of a dissolved chemical by advection and diffusion through a heterogeneous porous medium. Unlike traditional homogenization or volume averaging techniques, we do not assume a good separation of scales. The new...
Insect damage was extensive to Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, western white pine, and western larch cones at most seed production areas surveyed in 1979. From 70 to 100 percent of the cones from several collecting periods were injured. Moderate damage (40-70 percent of cones injured) occurred to Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, western...
Browsing is one of the methods used for finding and refinding information on the web or in the file local system and there are opportunities to avoid this, particularly if that information is revisited frequently. We present empirical results from a field study contrasting patterns of browsing to local and...

Collaborative filtering (CF) algorithms are used in a wide range of internet applications. However the chief objective of using CF algorithms across most of these applications is to discover items that might be of interest to its users. CF algorithms work by obtaining feedback from users on the items that...
The set of codewords for a standard error-correcting code can be viewed
as subset of the vertices of a hypercube. Two vertices are adjacent in a hypercube exactly when their Hamming distance is 1. A code is a perfect-error-correcting code if no two codewords are adjacent and every non-codeword is...
This is the third edition of a book that was initiated with the annotation of the function of all the genes in the most commonly studied baculovirus, AcMNPV. The second and third editions involved the update of this information and its integration into chapters covering the major processes central to...
This book is based on a project to completely annotate what is known about the function of the ~150 genes encoded by the genome of the most commonly investigated baculovirus, AcMNPV. Once the annotation was completed (summarized in Chapter 12), the material was organized into a series of chapters integrating...
