Abstract
  • In the absence of formal insurance, fishers often ”self-insure” against financial risk due to environmental and economic factors by adjusting fishing activities over species, space, and time. This diversification can be effective (e.g., Kasperski and Holland, 2013; Cline, Schindler, and Hilborn, 2017; Sethi, Dalton, and Hilborn, 2012; Fuller et al., 2017; Finkbeiner, 2015). Limited entry and catch shares management (e.g., ITQs, cooperatives) may foster reduced diversification by enabling and incentivizing specialization. Limited entry and catch shares may also help stabilize individual catch and revenues. Mechanisms: better achievement of management targets, longer seasons, and the flexibility to participate in formerly overlapping derby fisheries.
