Abstract
  • We developed a scientific information management system to facilitate remote access and analysis of earth and space science data, using the Component Model of software development provided by the Java language. The data sets are part of the Earth Observing. System project, being carried out at the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University. Software components have been developed to provide access to particular data sets and these function as clients to different server objects which provide database access, computation and persistence services. A container application that provides an environment to assemble and run these components has been developed and serves as a workspace to the end-user. The client and server sides of the information system are physically distributed and communicate as a set of distributed objects. The implementation uses many standard design patterns that promote reusability of code and design in this information system.
