Abstract
  • The Peruvian cocoa sector has been growing quickly since the beginning of this century due to international demand for this commodity together with concentrated international cooperation, including NGOs and governmental agencies. Similarly, certification among cocoa producers has been growing quickly. Little is known regarding how certification impacts environmental and socioeconomic performance by cocoa producers. This study aims to analyze in the Peruvian cocoa sector the impacts of certification on the environment and socioeconomic factors of farmers by using a systematic literature review methodology. This study finds ten relevant articles related to its research objectives, only two of which show a positive and significant impact of certification on the environment. Of the ten, only five articles show a positive and significant impact of certification on the socioeconomic factors of cocoa farmers. This study concludes that in the Peruvian cocoa sector certification has mixed results about its impact on both the environment and socioeconomic indicators. In addition, this study highlights the knowledge gap in Peru about the impact of certification of this commodity.
