Abstract
  • This study explores an underground museum located in Pendleton, Oregon. Using the method of Critical Discourse Analysis, I identify the ways Whiteness and Chinese as “the Other” are visually and verbally depicted. This study uses a qualitative approach to identify the ways both groups are presented on the tour. The findings of the analysis show how Whiteness is presented as complex, enacting agency, and worthy of redemption. In contrast, Chinese were presented as “the Other” in more simplistic depictions, as lacking agency, and not worthy of redemption. The results of the study demonstrate the need to unlearn and relearn how society continues to perpetuate White ideologies. Additionally, this study offers recommendations for how the tour can improve and address the problematic behaviors this study identified.
