Abstract
  • This dissertation examines college students' reflections on gender-related topics within a social justice course of a teacher preparation program. Using critical and feminist approaches, this study explores how a strategically designed curriculum focused on the study of gender enhances students' understanding of sexism, gender oppression, and masculinity. The curriculum employs reflection questions grounded in critical reflection and feminist narrative perspectives to foster the comprehension of gender issues at personal and structural levels. Employing thematic analysis and feminist narrative methods, findings show the intersectional ways in which gender oppression and sexism negatively impact, in one way or another, the lives of the 74 study participants whose identities vary in terms of gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, and disciplinary majors. The participants’ stories and reflections in this study revealed how family, schooling, and media act as gender socialization forces that contribute to an internalization of heteronormative ideologies, representing the dominant narratives that emerged in this study. While this study does not focus on direct teaching practice impact, findings show how the study of gender encouraged participants who declared education as their main major to explore ways to challenge sexism and gender oppression in their future classrooms. This dissertation sets the stage for future research on pre-service teachers and their gender-informed teaching approaches. In chapter six, implications for future research and practice are discussed.
