Abstract
  • Understanding how the latitudinal distribution of methane sources changed between stadial and interstadial climate states during the last glacial period can provide important clues about how terrestrial hydroclimate and ecosystems evolved between these different states. The punctuation of the millennial-scale structure by Heinrich events is also of interest in this context, given evidence for significant impacts on low latitude climate and the methane budget. Using the interpolar difference in methane mixing ratios derived from the GISP2 and WAIS Divide ice cores, and a simple three-box atmospheric model, we show that the latitudinal distribution of methane sources changed between Greenland stadial and interstadial climate states. Tropical and high latitude northern hemisphere sources increased at stadial-interstadial transitions, with tropical sources dominating the contribution to the atmospheric methane mixing ratio. In addition, during Heinrich Stadials we find a particularly low interpolar difference. These periods are characterized by a mid-stadial increase in methane which is driven by tropical sources, likely due to an increase in precipitation and wetland inundation in the southern tropics.
