Abstract
  • Mullite-zirconia composites have been slated for use in a novel miniature ceramic turbine engine components developed for unmanned air vehicle (UAV) engine applications. Economically feasible production of these complex components requires the use of a near-net shape process such as powder injection molding (PIM). This thesis explores the development and characterization of two mullite-zirconia feedstocks for such an application. Results from rheological and thermal characterization were used to determine the suitability of the novel feedstocks for PIM as well as to determine the range of conditions available for subsequent processing steps. Molding and sintering trials were performed based on these findings. The results provide conformation of the PIM process as a manufacturing alternative for the near-net shape production of geometrically complex components with mullite-zirconia composite ceramic materials.
