Abstract
  • Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained increasing attention due to their promising applications (e.g., gas storage/separations, and catalysis) as nanoporous materials stemming from generally ultrahigh porosities and surface areas. Recently, research has shifted to synthesize MOF thin films and micropatterns that enable new applications (e.g., optoelectronics, smart coatings, and sensors). In this study, several techniques were conducted to achieve improved MOF thin-film deposition, including self-sacrificing templated interfacial synthesis, heat-induced stepwise layering deposition, and microfluidic-assisted synthesis with continuous flow. These techniques show special favor for thin-film deposition in terms of increasing deposition rate for thin film, reducing deposition time, minimizing chemical consumption and waste production, and fine-tuning the reaction conditions. These features enable economical and controllable deposition of MOF thin films, which contributes to the commercialization of MOFs. Moreover, per the properties of specific MOFs, potential applications of the resulting MOF thin films in each section were investigated and demonstrated. To summarize, the efficiency of each deposition technique and the functionality of each MOF thin films were systematically studied, providing a general support for thin-film deposition technique and a foundation for the future development of MOFs and their commercialization.
