Abstract
  • My thesis is a novel about mental illness. It follows the stories of four different women who all suffer from mental or emotional disorders. My novel explores the dynamics of relationships, trauma, mental illness, and sexuality. I work to create purposeful ambiguity in my novel between reality and the manifestations of my characters’ disorders and trauma. There is a male character who is open to interpretation. The goal was to create uncertainty over whether he’s real. Either way, he is meant to be a projection of my main characters’ inner selves. He is symbolic of disordered behavior, negative self-talk, poor self-image, etc. My goal was to use my knowledge of fiction writing and literature to create a novel that explores the complexities of characters and relationships complicated by mental health and trauma. In writing this novel, I studied a variety of fiction. I examined texts that utilize experimental techniques and those that examine relationships, mystery, and mental illness. I have interest in the difference between experimental novels and novels that use more traditional techniques. In my own novel, I have attempted to use a combination of these techniques. I attempted to create tension and suspense in my novel in several ways, including switching between points of view, creating ambiguity, and leaving chapters with twists at the ends.
