Abstract
  • Asians are a minority group that are scarcely represented throughout Hollywood and the film industry. Even when there is some type of inclusion, they are often subjected to stereotypes that have been perpetuated for decades. This contributes to shaping how Asian and Asian Americans are perceived, as well as the development of the Asian American identity. With the rise of streaming services and promotion of independent films, it opens up a new avenue for the exposure. Some recent films have been critically acclaimed in promoting Asian and Asian American representations in the mainstream media, and this thesis will examine the progression of those representations by analyzing the limitations and advancements of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) and Minari (2020).
  • Keywords: representations in film, Asian and Asian American stereotypes, media portrayals
