Abstract
  • The present study was a program evaluation of KidSpirit that investigated how gymnastics coaches’ growth mindsets changed over an eight week period after a training intervention. A mixed-method approach was used to measure growth mindset and self-determination theory (SDT). There were three aims of this study: (1) participants would improve their growth mindset throughout the duration of the study, (2) participants would apply growth mindset and SDT concepts in their everyday lives, and (3) the findings of this study will create new training methods and procedures for KidSpirit’s future employees. Pre and post test survey was given to participants to measure their growth mindsets before being given training on growth mindset and SDT. Paired samples t-tests, correlations, and averages were used to analyze quantitative data. No significant differences were found from the t-tests, however correlational results show that autonomy was significantly correlated with growth mindset, competence, and relatedness in the post-test questionnaire. Throughout the eight week study, participants completed a series of weekly writing reflections that prompted them to recall information from the training and apply it into their lives. Qualitative data was analyzed using narrative analysis. Participants seemed to have a better understanding of growth mindset, how it has effects on many other contexts through more detailed, personal, and meaningful qualitative responses throughout the study. This research will eventually be used as a way for KidSpirit to improve training practices for employees based on psychological theories.
