Abstract
  • Prior studies examining hate subreddits (communities within Reddit.com) have brought valuable insights into how social media platforms and society can reduce online hate speech. However, these studies either contain a small sample size of hate communities or focus on a narrow set of hate ideologies. In this thesis, I introduce a novel dataset of 120 hate subreddits, grouped into three distinct categories (racist, anti-LGBTQ, and misogynistic). Using this dataset, I describe general trends in hate community membership and the content shared within such communities over time. I find that the total size of hate communities, as well as the levels of hate speech within them, has drastically reduced in recent years, likely due to changes in moderation policies. I also observe a tendency for the diversity in hate speech used by hate subreddits to increase throughout their lifespan. Finally, I show that if a user of one hate subreddit receives a reply from a user who has posted in another hate subreddit, they are more likely to subsequently post in that hate subreddit than a user of the same origin subreddit who has not had such an interaction. Examining these cross-subreddit interactions further, I find they are most effective for subreddits that are less central in the inter-subreddit network. Enabled by the benefits of a large dataset of hate subreddits, this thesis demonstrates mechanisms that allow subreddits to influence each other, potentially creating a more homogeneous environment of online hate.
