Abstract
  • The purpose of this project is to assist the OSU Baja Racing vehicle in turning more sharply. This is done using a turning brake, which locks one rear wheel to facilitate turning on a smaller radius. This project focuses on the development of a custom cylinder housing for the turning brake system. Additionally, a method of measuring the output pressure of brake cylinders generated by known applied forces was developed in order to test the cylinder. The developed custom turning brake cylinder housing holds two brake cylinders in parallel and operates them effectively. It fulfills its goal of holding the cylinder components like the stock housing would while providing additional functionality as a turning brake housing. Compared to last year’s design, it is 27% lighter, 16% more reliable, fits a dust boot on the front lip, and accommodates a custom ⅜ NPT fitting on the input port. A testing setup was developed to measure its performance in comparison to the stock housing and promising data was collected. Testing data showed that under different loads, the custom housing performs slightly better or worse than the stock housing. On average, the custom housing delivers 6.7% greater pressures than the stock housing and leaks down 3.9% more quickly. These numbers are similar enough to the stock housing to justify its use on future Baja vehicles.
