Abstract
  • The Expedition of Whispers is a one-act play about five adventurers who enter an ancient temple in search of a lost historical artifact. Each member of the expedition has a closely guarded secret, and must confront one another as those secrets are revealed. The Expedition of Whispers was performed by the Oregon State University Theatre Department as the Winter Term 2020 Lab Theatre production, and it was directed by Dr. Elizabeth Helman, my mentor. The acting, set design, lighting, sound, costuming, and crew work were done primarily by OSU students. Performances were February 13-15, 2020 at 7:30 PM, and February 16, 2020 at 2:00 PM. This thesis details my inspirations, the entire process of creating this play (from writing to performance), and other aspects of my experience. The Expedition of Whispers is a melodrama reminiscent of adventure films such as the Indiana Jones franchise, (although other media franchises more directly inspired this work). The central message I attempted to convey in the play is that self-honesty and knowing oneself are among the most important tenets of human morality.
