Abstract
  • When running for a political office, a candidate’s platform is important for the voter to understand what the that individual believes. Candidates do not always lay out a concrete platform and tend to stay away from salient issues, such as climate change and its effects, and run on platforms that tend to be less policy oriented and more character based. This thesis looks at how often members of the United States House of Representatives discuss sea level rise on Twitter depending on their district’s potential risk from sea level rise. To determine the risk factor that a district has, the property tax base, the worth of homes that are in danger, and the total number of homes effected are used. Our results suggest that as the risk factor of a district increases, representatives are more likely talk about sea level rise.
