Abstract
  • Each year, whether it be under voluntary or unvoluntary circumstances, countless professional athletes retire from their sport. Even by the average retirement age of 30, many are still underprepared to face the challenges that accompany the transition. Along with the changes in schedule, identity, and social group, numerous professional athletes are faced with the challenges of finding a new way to make a living. Because of the focus and dedication required to reach the highest level of competition in their sport, many professional athletes overlook the importance of preparing for their life after sports. Professional sports leagues and organizations can mitigate the risk of a poor transition by providing education and resources to show athletes the opportunities they can take advantage of. These opportunities include their leadership qualities, professional skills, and network, all of which may be unrecognized by the athlete until they are made aware of their presence. Throughout independent research, I attempt to outline the challenges athletes face as they transition out of their sport, and the opportunities they can take advantage of as they transition into a new career. This includes an outline of current programs available through professional sports leagues and organizations as well as commentary on how those can improve to decrease the pressure athletes feel to figure it out all on their own.
